What sets Discover apart from other credit card issuers?

Unlike issuers such as Capital One, Chase and Wells Fargo, Discover functions as both a credit card issuer and network, ranking among the top four issuers in the country. As a credit card network, it independently processes transactions among merchants, customers and banks, eliminating the need for partnerships to extend lines of credit.

It boasts a 99 percent acceptance rate at U.S. merchants, although international acceptance may be more limited. However, this may not be the biggest deal (unless you’re a student studying abroad) since Discover doesn’t carry any high-powered travel cards. Instead, Discover's range of credit cards focus on everyday value and peace of mind for everyday spenders and credit builders with:

The Discover it® Secured and Discover it® Student Cash Back cards have earned perfect 5/5 Bankrate Review Scores and are the only cards that have consistently won Bankrate Awards* for students and credit-builders.

Discover also has a track record of excellent customer service satisfaction, but it’s worth noting that it ranked fifth in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study — a stark drop from its second-place ranking in the 2024 study (and its typical first or second-place position over the years). The 2025 study also ranked the Discover it® Student Cash Back as the third-best no-annual-fee rewards card, with the Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Miles also ranking above average.

*The Discover it® Secured has won “Best credit card for building your credit” in 202220232024 and 2025; the Discover it® Student Cash Back has won “Best credit card for students” in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

Tips on choosing the best Discover card

The Discover card you choose should be based on your financial goals and needs. For example, students with little or no credit history might choose one of Discover's student credit cards. If you need to work on your credit, Discover offers secured cards for credit-builders, and if you’re a cash back enthusiast, you might consider a Discover cash back card.

Here are a few tips to help you determine which card best fits your needs.

  • Credit Card Search Icon

Determine what you want most from your credit card

Naturally, your primary goal should drive which type of credit card you should choose, and Discover makes this a pretty straightforward selection. If you’re building or repairing your credit, the Discover it® Secured Credit Card is the only option if you’re not a student. The Discover it® Chrome is easily the best pick for paying off a balance. Reward-seekers should consider the high-rate Discover it® Cash Back, but flat-rate rewards fans and travelers may prefer the Discover it® Miles.

  • Credit None Icon

    Assess your credit score

Discover hasn’t locked any of their cards behind a minimum excellent credit requirement, although we recommend you have at least a good credit score before applying for the issuer’s three mainline rewards cards. If your credit score is any lower, you may have to settle for the Discover it® Secured since Discover unfortunately doesn’t offer a card specifically for fair credit.

  • Credit Card Zero Percent Icon

Would you need time to pay off new purchases or a balance transfer?

You can further whittle down the Discover cards on your shortlist if you’d like the safety net of an intro APR on purchases in case of an emergency. The Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Miles would be the best options in this case. If you already have a balance and you want to keep interest at bay for a while, the Discover it® Chrome is the prime candidate.

  • Credit Card With Dollar Sign Icon

Consider your spending habits and rewards goals

Beyond credit requirements or intro APR needs, the best Discover card for you comes down to the rewards structure since they share similar fees and features. The Discover it® Cash Back packs the issuer’s highest rewards rates, but the rotating categories may be too high maintenance for some people. Instead, the Discover it® Miles and its flat-rate rewards could be the most consistently rewarding, except for modest spenders focused on gas and dining.

Expert advice on Discover cards

Although some credit card features look good on paper, they may require real-world usage to fully evaluate. Below, we’ve highlighted the hands-on experience Bankrate editors Nouri ZarrughHarlan Vaughn and Liza Carrasquillo have had with their Discover credit cards, including the issuer’s fee policies, international acceptance and customer service.

Bankrate staff insights

“One of the downsides of carrying a wallet full of cards and constantly switching back and forth between them, like I do, is that payment due dates can be tough to juggle. So I’ve paid more in late fees than I care to admit. That’s why I love Discover’s forgiving late fee policy. Mistakes happen, and when I missed my Discover card’s due date (the first and only time), I was so grateful I had a second chance to get things sorted.”

Nouri Zarrugh Nouri Zarrugh, Senior Editor, Credit Cards

“I took my Discover it® Miles card on dual trips to Japan and Europe during a quarter when restaurants were a bonus category. I’d always heard that Discover cards aren’t as widely accepted as other cards, but that has not been my experience. I’ve used mine around the world and domestically, and I can count on one hand the number of times it wasn’t accepted, so don’t let that be a limiting factor.”

Harlan Vaughn Harlan Vaughn, Senior Editor, Credit Cards

“While Discover cards aren't the best on the market in terms of perks and rewards rates, in my opinion, the issuer makes up for it with strong customer service. The few times I've had to call about fraudulent charges on my account, Discover reps have always been courteous, considerate and quick to resolve the issue.

"Plus, the issuer makes it easy to stay on top of my card use. Discover's app is pretty intuitive, and I like that I can use it to view my credit score quickly. This was especially helpful when I was using the card to build my credit.”

Liza Carrasquillo Liza Carrasquillo, Editor, Credit Cards

In the news: Capital One-Discover merger

If you’re considering applying for a Discover card in the near future, you should be aware of the recent merger between Discover and Capital One. The deal was finally approved by regulators 14 months after being announced, and officially closed on May 18, 2025. While it’s understandable for consumers to have questions, this merger has the potential to expand the power of Capital One’s payment network further into card processing and enhance cardholders’ experience with Discover’s historically award-winning customer service. Capital One and Discover cards won’t be changing anytime soon, but now could be a good time to study up on the top Capital One and Discover cards in case one of the cards is a perfect match for you in its current condition.

Though public details are limited, we do know that the issuer has begun sending out replacement Capital One debit and ATM cards using the Discover network on a rolling basis — meaning if you have multiple cards, you may not receive replacements for each account at once. Eventually, Capital One likely plans to switch at least some of their credit cards from the Visa and Mastercard networks to Discover, although they haven’t announced when (and which) cards are moving to the new network. It’ll probably take Capital One a few years to expand the current Discover network internationally, so this could affect where any Capital One cards you currently have (or plan to get) will be accepted. This could be an issue worth considering for Capital One travel cards.

In the meantime, it’s worth noting that you can no longer transfer a balance between Capital One and Discover card accounts (and even recent, pending transfers might be rejected). Plus, you may not be able to redeem Discover rewards in some situations (like direct deposit cash back to certain new deposit accounts). Fortunately, Discover also announced any repayment plans with them won’t be affected by the merger.

We select cards for “Best” credit cards pages based primarily on how cards score in our proprietary card rating system, our editors’ subjective assessment of card quality, card approval odds and credit requirements and unique card features.

Cards typically must score a minimum of 3.0 stars to be included on a “Best” list. However, we may include cards with scores below 3.0 if they have low credit requirements or unique features — despite their scores, these cards may still be among the “best” in certain categories. Card ratings are not influenced by advertisers or issuer relationships in any way.

Card selection and ordering may vary based on business considerations, including Bankrate visitor interest, site interactions and card application volume. Affiliate commissions (see how we make money), limited-time offers and a card’s general popularity in the product landscape may also influence which cards we feature on our pages and the order in which they appear. Bankrate’s editorial and business teams also strive to feature a variety of card types from various issuers.

Here’s a quick look at how our rating methodology breaks down for Discover cards:

  • 4 - 4.9 stars 35%
