Bottom line

You’ll want this card on your radar if you’re a dedicated shopper at Gap Inc. brands, but it lacks value for everyone else. Like most store credit cards, you’ll also be subjected to a high ongoing APR and limited rewards flexibility.

Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard overview

If you’re a frequent shopper at Banana Republic or its sister brands, Athleta, Gap and Old Navy, then the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard® can offer you some valuable perks. Outside of these companies, however, it functions much like any other high APR retail credit card. If you’re capable of paying your bill in full each month and the rewards make sense for you, then the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard could be a good fit.

Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard pros and cons

Pros

  • Checkmark Icon

No annual fee makes this card affordable without any added cost to offset.

  • Checkmark Icon

Access to member sales and rewards can provide added value for enthusiastic customers of Gap Inc. brands.

  • Checkmark Icon

Receive early access to select sales to get a jump on savings.

Cons

  • Its high APR is well above the current national average credit card interest rate.

  • It only earns boosted rewards at Gap Inc. brands, limiting its value to cardholders who don’t shop or spend heavily at those brands.

  • It lacks cardholder perks and offers that can help you find value outside of its fixed rewards rate at Gap Inc. brands.

Why you might want the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard

You’ll only want this card if you’re already a Banana Republic customer or shop regularly at other Gap Inc. brands. You can get decent value from purchases at these brands, especially if you make a large purchase when opening the card.

Rewards: High rewards rate for Gap Inc. purchases

You’ll earn best-in-class rewards at Athleta, Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy, which is great if you shop at any of these stores regularly. You should consider your annual spending at these stores to determine if holding this card will be worth it, but you won’t need to worry about an annual fee eating into your earnings.

Annual fee: Costs nothing to hold

Although you’ll only earn boosted rewards at Gap Inc. stores, this card doesn’t charge an annual fee. So you won’t need to worry about offsetting any ongoing costs with your rewards earnings — unless you carry a balance and pay interest on it. Few no-annual-fee cards offer rewards rates of up to 5X points for purchases.

Welcome offer: Potentially high value for a big purchase

You can plan your new card application alongside a high-dollar purchase to get a 25 percent discount off your first transaction with this card. If you spend $1,000 in your first transaction when opening the card, you’ll get a $250 discount. If you spend $5,000, that’s a $1,250 discount. However, you’ll want to pay this balance off before it accrues interest.

This offer can pay off for shoppers who love the brands or also shop for their kids, but lacks the same punch that standard welcome offers have for everyone else. For example, the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card offers, for a limited time, a $100 credit to use towards flights, stays and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel during your first cardholder year. Plus, earn a $200 cash bonus once you spend $500 on purchases within the first 3 months.

Why you might want a different rewards card

This card is rewarding for Gap Inc. customers, but it lacks value for everyone else (as expected, since it’s a retail store credit card). If you don’t shop at any of Gap Inc.’s brands you should consider another rewards credit card.

APR: Ridiculously high interest rate

It's best to avoid carrying a balance on a credit card, but especially on this one — the APR is well above the average credit card interest rate of around 20 percent and nearly double the interest rate on many low-interest credit cards. If you end up paying interest, you risk offsetting any rewards you earn with the card.

Rewards value: Limited value for everyday cardholders

You won’t earn boosted rewards for everyday purchases like gas, groceries or travel, only on Gap Inc. brand purchases. If you like to shop at a number of different stores, a rotating category card could let you earn rewards with more flexibility.

Best cards to pair with the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard

To maximize the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard, consider pairing it with a cash back that offers boosted rewards on your other spending categories.

How the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard compares to other retail cards

If you’re considering the Banana Republic Rewards Mastercard, you might've received an offer at checkout or are an avid brand shopper. But consider these rewards cards that could offer more long-term value.

  • You're making at least one big purchase at one of the Gap Inc. stores and want the 25 percent off welcome offer

We rate credit cards using a proprietary card scoring system that ranks each card’s estimated average rewards rate, estimated annual earnings, welcome bonus value, APR, fees, perks and more against those of other cards in its primary category.

Each card feature is assigned a weighting based on how important it is to people looking for a card in a given category. These features are then scored based on how they rank relative to the features on other cards in the category. Based on these calculations, each card receives an overall rating of 1-5 stars (with 5 being the highest possible score and 1 being the lowest).

We analyzed over 150 of the most popular rewards and cash back cards to determine where each stacked up based on their value, cost, benefits and more. Here are some of the key factors that influenced this card’s overall score and how the score influenced our review:
