Why choose a Bank of America business card

Compared to other issuers, Bank of America doesn’t have as wide a variety of credit cards — especially if you want premium perks or above-average travel rewards options. However, Bank of America cards should be on your radar if you want straightforward rewards or adaptable cash back categories. Bank of America is also one of the only issuers to offer a secured business card.

If you have Preferred Rewards for Business status, Bank of America business cards can offer higher rewards rates than many other no-annual-fee business cards. However, whether you’ll qualify for Preferred Rewards for Business — and which tier you are eligible for — can affect whether you may want to choose a business card with a different issuer.

Pros and cons of Bank of America business credit cards

Pros

  • Checkmark Icon

No annual fees: While some business cards may have better rewards rates coupled with a yearly fee, you can enjoy modest rewards for no fee with a Bank of America rewards card.

  • Checkmark Icon

Easy-to-earn welcome bonuses: Even if you're a modest spender, you can earn a decent bonus and get solid intro value without the higher spending requirement found on several competing cards.

  • Checkmark Icon

Unique rewards rate boosts: The Preferred Rewards for Business program rewards banking loyalty with a 25 to 75 percent rewards rate boost across all eligible business cards from Bank of America.

Cons

  • Limited perks: While these cards can be inexpensive, their lack of perks makes premium business cards more appealing if you can offset the cost.

  • Weak intro APR offers: Intro APR offers are relatively short compared to those of competing cards and only apply to new purchases.

  • Limited redemption options: Unlike several competing issuers, Bank of America doesn’t offer redemption options worth more than 1 cent per point.

Expert advice for Bank of America business cards

Bank of America’s business cards don’t come with annual credits or premium perks like airport lounge access or travel transfer partners, but they can provide solid earning potential for your business.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your Bank of America business card.

  • Money Bag Icon

Move your business savings to Bank of America

Consider moving most of your business savings into qualifying Bank of America business accounts to help you qualify for the Preferred Rewards for Business program.

Keep in mind that you’ll need at least $20,000 in an eligible account to qualify for the lowest Preferred Rewards tier and at least $100,000 for the full 75 percent rewards rate boost. Also, make sure the rewards boost can be more lucrative than investing your money in a different business savings account.

  • Dollar Icon

    Maximize your spending

To ensure you’re getting the most out of your Bank of America business card, tailor your spending to the card’s highest rewards categories.

For example, the ideal combination is to use the Customized Cash card for eligible bonus category purchases and the Unlimited Cash for all other purchases. Make sure to swap the Customized Cash’s top bonus category as needed to maximize rewards on each month’s anticipated expenses.

  • Travel Icon

Avoid using the wrong card abroad

Many Bank of America business credit cards have a foreign transaction fee. If you often travel internationally, consider the Business Travel Rewards card or Atmos Rewards Visa Business card since those are the only Bank of America business cards that don't charge this fee.

Is the Preferred Rewards for Business program worth it?

The Preferred Rewards for Business program gives Bank of America business cards a major advantage by boosting rewards rates by up to 75 percent. To qualify, you’ll need a business checking account and maintain an average three-month daily balance of $20,000 or more across eligible Bank of America business checking and Merrill business investment accounts combined.

Members can qualify for one of its tiers: Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Honors tiers, which can unlock perks such as cash back on eligible payroll service fees, interest rate discounts on future Business Advantage lines of credit and select fee waivers. The Platinum Honors tier (and even the Platinum tier) can significantly boost your card’s rewards — potentially offering one of the highest flat cash back and year-round cash back category rates available.

Use the chart below to see what it takes to reach each tier and how much more you can earn through the program.

Card Base rewards rate Gold Status: + 25% rewards (min. $20,000 balance) Platinum Status: + 50% rewards (min. $50,000 balance) Platinum Honors Status: +75% rewards (min. $100,000 balance)

Why our Bankrate expert loves Bank of America business cards

Earning the Preferred Rewards program’s 75 percent rewards rate boost was a major reason why Bankrate writer Ryan Flanigan, CCC opened a Bank of America business card.

Bankrate staff insights

The welcome bonus and intro APR offer gave me flexibility with large business expenses. Plus, I was able to earn Preferred Rewards business status by consolidating assets in Bank of America business accounts, which gave my rewards rate a big boost and made it one of my best options for general spending.”

Bankrate’s take: Qualifying for the Preferred Rewards for Business program may be more difficult than the personal Preferred Rewards program, as different accounts count toward eligibility. For example, Merrill stock and retirement accounts help qualify for the personal Preferred Rewards program but don’t count toward Preferred Rewards business status.

How we choose the best Bank of America business credit cards

We select cards for “Best” credit cards pages based primarily on how cards score in our proprietary card rating system, our editors’ subjective assessment of card quality, card approval odds and credit requirements and unique card features.

Cards typically must score a minimum of 3.0 stars to be included on a “Best” list. However, we may include cards with scores below 3.0 if they have low credit requirements or unique features — despite their scores, these cards may still be among the “best” in certain categories. Card ratings are not influenced by advertisers or issuer relationships in any way.

Card selection and ordering may vary based on business considerations, including Bankrate visitor interest, site interactions and card application volume. Affiliate commissions (see how we make money), limited-time offers and a card’s general popularity in the product landscape may also influence which cards we feature on our pages and the order in which they appear. Bankrate’s editorial and business teams also strive to feature a variety of card types from various issuers.
