Bankrate's take

Policyholders with lower credit in Michigan, New Jersey or Pennsylvania may want to get a quote from Citizens United Reciprocal Exchange, or CURE for short. CURE does not consider credit history, occupation or education level when setting insurance rates. CURE only offers auto policies, so it might not be the best fit for someone looking to handle all their insurance needs with one company.

OVERVIEW
Info Icon
Over the years, State Farm has won Bankrate Awards for auto, home and life insurance thanks to the company’s highly rated customer service, accessible agents, digital tools and competitive premiums. Those who like to keep their financial business centralized may appreciate that State Farm also offers banking and investment services, unlike CURE, which only offers car insurance.
Progressive is known in the auto insurance industry for writing policies for high-risk drivers and offering competitive rates. In Michigan and Pennsylvania, Progressive car insurance rates are below the state average, according to Bankrate's analysis of average rates from Quadrant Information Services. However, Progressive's rates are slightly above average in New Jersey. Like State Farm, Progressive offers other insurance lines like home and life policies.

CURE car insurance review

CURE auto insurance, or the Citizens United Reciprocal Exchange, is a New Jersey-based auto insurer that calculates insurance rates in a different way than most companies. In setting premiums, CURE primarily considers non-economic factors like a policyholder’s driving record rather than their credit history, occupation or education level.

CURE offers basic car insurance coverage in Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. CURE’s car insurance coverage offerings are fairly limited, with standard options including bodily injury and property damage liability, comprehensive coverage, collision coverage and personal injury protection (PIP). A somewhat uncommon bonus, its policies come with roadside assistance, as well. Collision coverage is available at three different levels:

  • Broad collision, which applies a deductible only if you’re more than 50 percent at fault for an accident

  • Standard collision, which always has a deductible

  • Limited collision, which will only pay for damage to your vehicle if you were less than 50 percent at fault for an accident

CURE car insurance cost

CURE’s policies may be appealing to drivers with poor credit histories, as CURE does not use credit as a rating factor. CURE also doesn't consider occupation or education level when calculating premiums. However, CURE’s average rates aren’t available, so you’ll need to request a personalized quote from CURE to estimate your potential costs.

Compare average car insurance rates

Keep in mind that auto insurance premiums are based on individual rating factors such as the make and model of your vehicle, the state you live in, your driving record, your claims history and the coverage you purchase, so the actual cost of a CURE insurance policy will differ for every driver. Below, Bankrate's insurance team compiled the average cost of car insurance in the three states where CURE sells policies.

State Avg. cost of full coverage per month Avg. cost of minimum coverage per month
Michigan $270 $75
New Jersey $252 $110
Pennsylvania $199 $43

Great customer service
“They have been phenomenal as far as customer service, anytime I have added a vehicle or had any kind of inquiry, they have been super friendly and timely. They also have the absolute cheapest rates out of any insurance company that I have asked for quotes from!! I insure several vehicles through cure Auto, and I thankfully, have not had to use them to file a claim but I don't think I will ever switch companies as long as they stay as they are!”

Poor claims handling
“Cure does not pick up their phone, never responded to my car accident,my lawyers are handling it and they lied about me reporting the accident, thank God I have all my documents and screenshot the incident report online”

In collaboration with market research firm SliceMR, Bankrate surveyed over 3,000 insurance customers nationwide from 2024–2025, asking policyholders to rate their insurer's cost, coverage, customer support and overall experience on a five-point scale. Bankrate and SliceMR collected and analyzed these customer ratings, along with website analytics and responses to three open-ended questions regarding customer experience. Responses are based on individual policyholders' policy details and personal experience, and therefore cannot be verified for accuracy. Users received an incentive for their feedback. All ratings are unedited and have not been reviewed or approved by insurance carriers. User-generated ratings are separate from carrier Bankrate Scores — which are calculated based on our proprietary methodology — and may not match.

Bankrate Score

Our 2025 Bankrate Score for auto insurance considers key variables that our insurance editorial team determined impact policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These factors include a robust assessment of each company’s cost of coverage, product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. We grouped these factors into three essential categories — cost and ratings, coverage and savings, and support — which we then weighted in a tiered approach.

Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.

50% Cost & ratings

30% Coverage & savings

20% Support

  • Tier 1 (Cost & ratings): To determine how well auto insurance companies satisfy these priorities, our team analyzed quoted premiums from Quadrant Information Services (if available), as well as any of the latest third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, Demotech and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Tier 2 (Coverage & savings): We assessed companies’ coverage options and availability to help policyholders find a provider that balances cost with coverage. Additionally, we evaluated the discount options listed on each company’s website.
  • Tier 3 (Support): To encompass the many ways an auto insurance company can support policyholders, we analyzed avenues of customer accessibility along with community support. This analysis incorporated additional financial strength ratings from S&P and Moody’s and factored in a company’s corporate sustainability efforts.

Tier scores are unweighted to show the company's true score in each category out of a possible five points.
